I am Satisfied with My Care: A Movie Review of Big Hero 6 by Kryzl Pascual
“From the creators of Wreck-It-Ralph and Frozen” comes another movie that will surely give you the feels and the wows. Big Hero 6 is an animated film by Walt Disney Animation Studios released in the Philippines on November 6. And since then, people have been spamming the internet with posts about this movie, giving it high credit and raising the expectations of those who have yet to watch it. And to those people, why haven’t you watched it yet?! Go to a movie theater right now, I assure you that you won’t be disappointed.
Animation and Design
The moment I first watched the trailer was also the moment I decided that I would watch this movie no matter what. The animation is smooth and detailed; as is expected from Disney and their new advancements in digital 3D animation. The setting, San Fransokyo, is an obvious mix of the urban neighborhood of San Francisco, California and the cultural sites of Tokyo, Japan, and not just by name. I’m talking about the sights: the tall buildings and the Japanese temples that littered the scenes.
Big Hero 6 is based on the Marvel comic series of the same name; but the movie and the comic book are vastly different. The characters are all practically re-imagined: Go Go Tomago went from hot-tempered ex-con to badass devil driver; Wasabi no Ginger went from knife-wielding sushi chef to laser nerd; Honey Lemon went from secret agent with a bag of wormholes to bubbly chemistry genius; Fred went from tough guy with a lizard-shaped force field to a happy-go-lucky guy wearing a hilarious fire-breathing lizard costume; and Hiro Hamada went from young Dr. Frankenstein to a rebellious teenager who doesn’t know where to spend his genius, and most importantly, Baymax went from a huge robot that can transform into a dragon to a cute, huggable, and adorable “healthcare companion” that’s impossible not to love. Their character designs completely suit these new personalities, and everything was, as they say, Disney-fied or appropriated into something lighter, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
Plot and Storyline
Walt Disney Animation Studios describes the movie as “an action-packed comedy-adventure about the special bond that develops between Baymax, a plus-sized inflatable robot, and prodigy Hiro Hamada. When a devastating event befalls the city of San Fransokyo and catapults Hiro into the midst of danger, he turns to Baymax and his close friends: adrenaline junkie Go Go Tomago, neatnik Wasabi, chemistry whiz Honey Lemon, and fanboy Fred. Determined to uncover the mystery, Hiro transforms his friends into a band of high-tech heroes called ‘Big Hero 6.’”
An action-packed comedy adventure, alright. Disney’s got the action down pat with its incredible fight scenes, which although short, will give the audience thrills and adrenaline with all the suspense and it has the light-hearted comedy that all Disney films have, especially in the form of Baymax, our adorable inflatable robot. However, that summary was lacking; that’s not all there is to the movie.
The trailer made me believe that Big Hero 6 was a superhero movie. I was wrong, or at least, I wasn’t entirely correct. The original Marvel comic series was indeed something akin to the Avengers, but Disney made it into something else. They made Big Hero 6 a story about human emotions, how it affects our thinking and actions, how it influences our lives, how it can change our worlds. It’s a story of love, revenge, care, and compassion. I will not say anything else because you should know this by now I do not want to spoil anything for those who have yet to watch it.
Disney seems to be good at doing this, hiding great lessons within great stories. There are so many things to be learned from this film and so many moments that are light and fun one moment, then will tug at your heartstrings the next. The movie makes you feel various emotions that you’ll never expect from it. It will make you laugh, it will make you cry, and maybe both at the same time. But afterwards, surely, like me, you will feel this satisfaction in your heart and like the rest of the world, you will be proclaiming its greatness.
“Baymax, I am satisfied with my care.”
