Member of the Month: Bogs Sularte

by GJ Vitug

Y’all remember this awesome poster from Rec Week, right?

NOW TELL ME THAT ISN’T A COOL POSTER! This and many other promos for CompSAt were single handedly done by our Member of the Month, Bogs Sularte. As the AVP for Promotions, he uses his finger skillz to create masterpieces to promote CompSAt’s upcoming events. He dedicates a lot of time and effort to each of his creations to make sure every detail he had planned in his head is carried out precisely. Remember the Blastoise mascot going around and the papercraft Charizard on the CompSAt table? Yup. Bogs did all of that.

Whatta pogi.

His incredible artistic talent isn’t something he got at a whim (otherwise I would doubt if he was human). Like a lot of great artists, Bogs had to start out small, and that he did. As a child, he discovered that he a fondness for drawing. He would use reams of bond paper both unused and recycled just to be able to pencil out objects he saw and thought. The trash bin would be filled with drawings our young artist would deem unfit to be shown off to others. At times, he would even try to copy movie posters he saw in the newspaper. Unlike other kids (or probably just me), he wouldn’t just put the paper on the picture to trace it. He’d painstakingly copy it side by side, trying to recreate the image as close as possible to the original. His relatives would praise him on his works, both originals and copied movie posters, commending him on the amount of details he put into each. However, he didn’t want to stop there. (Let’s take a moment to realize how child Bogs is able to already draw so well while barely through the first half of Grade School.)  He wanted to increase his skill in the craft he loved which is why he decided to join poster making contests outside of school. How did he fare? Well, from Grade 3 up until he graduated from Grade School, he won 1st place.

Drawing, however, wasn’t the only skill he was developing in grade school. He also honed his leadership skillz by joining the Boy Scouts and becoming chief of their troop, the Pig Patrol. Balancing his time for his craft, troop, and academics, Bogs was able to become the Valedictorian in his batch.

Once he entered Ramon Magsaysay High School in Cubao, he continued joining contests to test his abilities. The results of these contests weren’t as successful as the ones he had in Grade School, but that did not stop our awesome artist from pursuing his passion! In fact, he was more driven than ever to get better. While he stopped being a Boy Scout in High School, he became part of his school’s newspaper organization and the science club. Here, he continued to lead his peers by handling and organizing events like the Science Quiz Bee. It was also during this time that a couple of people didn’t get along so well with our awesome artist. Being the peaceful and mature man that he is, he worked out a compromise with these guys which help them get through their High School days with a hitch.

When college rolled around, it was quite a surprise for him. Everything seemed different and he was hit with culture shock. According to him, it was the first time he saw so many brilliant and talented people group in one school. He said, and I quote, “Parang lahat ng mga top ten ng mga schools nagsamasama sa iisang school. Royal Rumble kumbaga.” Nonetheless, he still joined two organizations: Ateneo Gabay and CompSAt. He said that the reason he joined these organizations was so he could be able to continue to hone his leadership abilities. With the help of his drawing skillz, he is able to set an example of being a leader by creating amazing promos and becoming the promos head. In relation with his friends, Bogs says he’s the adaptive type. Depending on the situation he’s in, he could either be very quiet and introverted, or noisy and outgoing.

Hearing from his friends might be a good idea as well:

Camille Ruiz, BS CS, blockmate:

“Masipag at eccentric. Kung humingi ka ng tulong sa kaniya, lalo na kung art-related, willing siya kahit walang bayad or kapalit parang, more for the experience and learning siya …sa kaniya ako nagpapagawa ng stuff pag yung mga artist friends ko ayaw dahil walang bayad. Eccentric dahil sa mga random outburst of gibberish niya. Ito rin sabi niya: ‘Hey girl, have you read Ecclesiasties 4:11? No? Let’s read it together.’ Honest din siya kasi sasabihin niya yung gusto niya sabihin in that sense mas kinakaya niya maging creative kasi hindi siya masyadong hesitant.”

Tingnan niyo! Bird ako!

Charlene Tolentino, BS CS, blockmate:

“Bogs = Promos. Portfolio niya na nga ata ‘yung CompSAt promos for this year e. Pero kung tatanungin mo siya kung marami ba siyang ginagawa, sasabihin niya siguro sa ‘yo, “Onti lang.” Sa block naman, si Bogs ang Jake Cuenca at Brad Pitt namin. Gano’n lang talaga kasi siya kapogi. :>”

Gianna Ganal, BS CS, blockmate:

“Bogs is not just creative in terms of creating those cool CompSAt posters, but he also makes sure to make his and anybody’s day colorful.”

James Toplis, BS CS, blockmate:

“Matiyaga siya, sobrang sipag at mabait. Ang taas ng tingin ko sa kanya bilang matinong estudyante…”

Mico Maglaque, BS CS, blockmate:

“Papa Bagani is one of the most talented people in the CS Block of our batch. Hand him anything – a pen, brush, or mouse – and watch magic unfold unto its respective medium. He’s also got good taste in music and is a skilled DotA player. If there’s anyone in the block who really deserves a brand-new laptop, it’s him.”

Paul Virrey, BS CS, blockmate:

“Weirdo mag-isip, pero magaling magdrawing! =)) Feeder (sa DotA). haha”

Richard Bunyi, BS CS, blockmate:

“Success is founded on many (many many) failures. Bogs is an exemplar of this idea. Let’s not dwell on the failures though, for they are greatly overshadowed by all the success. Just look at all the amazing promos he makes.”

AGAIN. THESE ARE AWESOME POSTERS.

It seems as though our Member of the Month’s perspective of himself matches the ones his friends have of him. Before this article ends our dear Bogs would like to leave us with one final message:

“Pangarap ko lang gumaling pa sa pagdadrawing, matulungan ang mga tao sa paligid ko na matutong mag-design (shoutout to ProCreate members! Whooo!) at panatilihing maganda sa mata ang promos ng CompSAt. Yeah. Cheers!”

Congratulations once again to Bogs Sularte, our Member of the Month! \m/
