Food Review: J.Co Donuts
by Moira Lozada
Got Dough?
Growing up, I wasn’t really known for having a sweet tooth. I would prefer anything sour or salty before even giving that edible round piece of dough oozing with chocolate, known as a “donut”, a chance. I guess it’s just not my cup of tea—or so I thought.
From “Mister Donut” to “Krispy Kreme”, never have I encountered a variety of this circular pastry that made me crave for more. Every single flavour that was thrown at me seemed similar to the one before it. The more donuts I ate, the less satisfying they became. These stores never really did the pastry justice—though perhaps save for one, J.Co.
Let me give you a little background on this store. It opened in the year 2005 and was first discovered in Indonesia. In a span of 4 years, the store was successful enough to have 73 outlet stores and, ‘til now, the franchise still continues to spread all over Southeast Asia.
Why does it make everyone crazy, though? For the past few weeks, I was lucky enough to grab a few of these eye-gasmic temptations—and friends, the exact words that came from my never-been-speechless mouth were “Oh My Frick” repeatedly. Those were the only words I was able to form because like my mouth, my mind was just overwhelmed with all the unfamiliar flavours that gracefully danced on my palette. Every bite was much more satisfying than the last one and every inch of the pastry was just pure bliss to its core. The combination of flavours was their key to success. For me, there was no “flavour better than all their other flavours;” all of them were gratifying in their own unique way. Once you’re finished with one, you’re bound to eat another. It’s sort of a trap that I don’t ever want to escape from.
These flavours come in different names and the ones I’ve been fond of so far are Alcapone, Mr. Green Tea, Oreology, Choco Caviar Strawberry, Heaven Berry, Blueberry More, Tiramisu, Avocado Dicaprio, Crunchy Crunchy, Berry Spears and Green Tease.
Each and every one of these donuts has its defining characteristic. Like for example, the crunchiness of the almonds that were sprinkled on the Alcarpones, the fruity filling of the berry flavoured donuts, the chocolate garnish around each Avocado Dicaprio, and the cheesecake sort of vibe that you get from Blueberry More and Berry Spears! Each of these has that element of surprise that you would surely love and would grow fond of.
Now, keep in mind that all of these donuts were handmade and each one was made right in front of your very eyes, you can see the whole baking process—from the ball of dough to the last garnish of chocolate—and you can guarantee that all these were baked fresh from the oven every single day, so don’t be surprised if you find a really—and I mean REALLY—long line in front of J.Co’s because beauty takes a lot of time! (And maybe because each group of people orders two to four dozens of donuts alone!)
If you’re the type who enjoys eating anything miniature, fear not for J.Co has an answer! They have these little mini J.Co donuts which they call J.Pops and they are—if not more than—as adorable as the original ones.
So friends, if you’ve got plenty of time to spare and dough you’ve been dying to spend, I suggest the best kinds of dough to go nuts for are all at J.Co’s! Experience the surprises that await you!
Makes me want a donut. Nice review.
