Package, A History

Package, A History

by Luke Prudente

Origins

In Java, a package is a namespace used to organize related classes. A CompSAt package consists of members grouped together with the objective of creating bonds among each other, to encourage each other to be active in the organization (by going to events, volunteering, etc.), and to make the dissemination of information easier. It’s basically your family in CompSAt.

Formulation

The Package system was an idea of CompSAt’s EB+AC for academic year 2009-2010 and Daniel Go, who was the VP of Special Operations, had the initiative to put into effect that idea. It was based on the COA organization’s family system which has a head for each group.

Transition from Old to New

Formerly, there were 12 packages that were remade every year. They were grouped according to interests discovered via interviews. In each package, there was an assigned package head in charge of organizing package bondings and leading the package in package tasks. The new system, which was implemented during the 2nd semester of last year, only has five packages but, originally, it was only supposed to be four.  This time it was done by an online personality test, with each package having only one package head who selects three co-package heads who will work with him.

Package Head to Super PackMan (Package Manager)

Starting this semester, another change will be made. Instead of one (1) package head and three (3) co-package heads for each package, there will be three (3) PackMans, one of whom will be called the Super PackMan. There will be one PackMan for each year level, who will be handling their own year level in every package, except for the freshmen who will be handled by the Super PackMan. The package can opt to form their own miniature system to better facilitate the package’s operation, such as committees, to assist the Super PackMan in handling the freshmen and helping the freshmen adjust to college.

The Packages
Jigglypuff (The Peacocks)

Peacocks love to surround themselves with people and enjoy being the center of attention. They are loud and adventurous. Guaranteed, dull moments will never exist while they’re around!

Cloud (The Owls)

Owls like getting the job done, but they never cut corners. They prefer to work alone and create flawless success, even with minimal support from others.

Weaknesses: working in a group

Ezio (The Hawks)

Hawks are always prepared. They usually ignore their emotions and and give out orders to achieve their goals. Their leadership skills and decisiveness ensures the best for the groups they lead.
Strengths: leadership and making decisions
Weaknesses: taking orders and emotions

Link and Yoda (The Doves)

Doves support anyone in need. They willingly take the back seat to preserve the peace within a group. They don’t mind taking orders. They normally avoid confrontations and try to prevent hostility.

Strengths: taking orders, emotions and moral support
weaknesses: dislike of confrontations and taking charge

Package Task

A package task is a challenge that requires a package to work together. In the old system, prizes were given to the winning package of every task. But in the new system, the package will be awarded points per task. And by the end of the year, the package with the most points merits a prize.

There will be new package tasks this year, specially made by the PackMans. Each package will be assigned a unique task, suited to a package’s personality type and abilities. The package tasks this year are different, but certainly something to watch out for.
