We all have different experiences because we encounter different things every day. We’ve had happy experiences, sad experiences, and all kinds of experiences. But since it’s Halloween month, let’s focus on the scary experiences, scary experiences of the freshmen CompSAt members.

Some of us may have experienced a life or death situation. Experiences like this make us wonder if we would still live or if we would survive. Let’s take a look at the experience of a Computer Science major, Raffeh. He was going on a trip to Tagaytay with his family when this scary experience happened. He was riding in his uncle’s car and as they were going uphill, the battery of the car died for at least 3 seconds, and they felt the car moving down. It was a manual car so his uncle was able to do something to make the car turn back on. When asked how he felt about that experience, he said, “Akalakomamamatayna kami.”

Scary isn’t it? I know I would have panicked if that happened to me. But would you ever think of panicking while sleeping? I know it may sound impossible, but this is not the case with Jason, an ECE major. His dream starts with headlines of his grandmother being chopped into pieces and is already in a wake. He then approaches the coffin to see his grandmother’s face when something or someone taps his shoulder. He then realizes that it is a nightmare but he can’t seem to wake up from it. He tried closing his eyes in his dream, but instead of that being the solution so he can wake up, he started having different dreams that felt like “all the horror movies combined,” as he puts it. He then starts hearing a familiar sound – his grandmother’s voice saying his name – and slowly opens his eyes and suddenly wakes up.

Life can be pretty scary, even without the help of the supernatural. But it isn’t completely scary without the supernatural. We all have heard scary stories from other people, or read some from the internet or books or magazines. Here is a story Mark, another CS major read from True Philippine Ghost Stories:

There was a patient in Makati Medical Center. The doctor of that patient went on vacation, so a substitute doctor was assigned to that patient. The patient didn’t know that the doctor can see ghosts and other supernatural beings. One time, the doctor needed to bring the patient to a room, and to get to that room, they have to use the elevator. While they were alone in the elevator, the elevator doors opened and there they saw a child. The patient was surprised because the doctor suddenly pressed the button to close the elevator doors and the child wasn’t able to get in the elevator. The elevator started moving and the patient asks the doctor why he didn’t let the child in. The doctor nervously answers and explains to the patient that he saw a tag on the wrist of the child, and that tag is placed around a patient’s wrist when they die. And then the patient raises his wrist and exclaims, “Ahh! Like this!”

It gives me goose bumps thinking of the stories I’ve read. But what scares me even more is when a story within the family is told to me. Like in the case of Carlo, another CS major, whose mom just told him the story. A relative of his, who liked playing the guitar, died. So after his death, they would hear someone playing the guitar every night.

Knowing that something supernatural is happening within the family is creepy. What happens if you witness something supernatural? What if you see something right before your very eyes? Are you familiar with Slenderman? What if I tell you that a CS major saw Slenderman? Here’s Javy’s story:

“Major exams, like midterms, can turn some people insane. So do horror games. And the night. As I was walking away from CTC, I was talking to my friends about our Lit midterms and how the narrator’s name was Frank and the importance of English in society.

“Next thing I know, I see him: a tall man with a pale white face and a suit. The Slenderman.

“I froze. I couldn’t believe that this fictional character who steals children and causes nightmares for a month is right in front of me. I was almost expecting white noise and static that characterizes his appearance.  Instead, I snapped out of my shock and pointed him out to my friends. Their reaction was surprised.  Eventually, I started hearing other things. That he was spotted in the SOM forest, and near Schmitt Hall. People started taking pictures and posting them online.”

We all have our own scary experiences. And it’s October, the month of Halloween. Be prepared to experience more of these stuff. Trust me, you can still encounter ghosts, witches, goblins, and white ladies. What other supernatural beings do you know of? Are you ready to encounter them?
