Food Review: Peanut Butter Co.

by Jonathan Matias

I’m going to change gears this month and just feature a single order from a restaurant: a milk shake and sandwich from Peanut Butter Company—henceforth referred to as PBC—on Katipunan, continuing the theme of my last review.  Now why this particular restaurant?  Because I had a crazy question in my head and I wanted to see if the PBC could answer it.

If you were gutsy enough to put peanut butter on anything, what would you put it on?

They have peanut butter in burgers, sandwiches, and yes, even milkshakes.  And that is what I am going to attempt to describe for you today, ladies and gentlemen.

First and foremost, a quick word about the location.  You can find the PBC on the second floor of the Regis Center, the tall building that connects directly to the blue footbridge from Gate 3.5.  The atmosphere is an eclectic one.  You’ll see mirrors and metal decorating the wall with a flat screen blasting music through speakers.  It’s a loud place and I definitely would not recommend going here alone.

Well then, onto the food that I ordered.  The Philly Cheese Steak (PCS) I ordered tastes like your ordinary PCS, but with the added bonus of a medley of tomatoes, peppers, and onions.  So instead of getting a bland cheese-beef concoction, you get a juicy mix of nature, cheese, and beef.  You won’t run into the problem of losing interest in your meal; the vegetables keep dancing on your tongue, reminding you that this is no ordinary cheese steak—it is one heck of a firework baked into a Philly Cheese Steak.

But what about the milkshake I ordered?  I decided on the White Chocolate Peanut Butter Cherry Milkshake.  (Yeah, it’s actually called that.  Très unique, non?)  The scrumptious peanut butter from your childhood has travelled to the present, bringing back the timeless, child-like joy of devouring creaminess reified.  This is how you fulfill that childhood dream of smothering everything in sweet, sweet peanut butter.  I almost felt like taking a spoon, scooping up some of it, and just licking it like I used to when I was *yay* high.  Why? Because instead of just regular peanut butter, you get this magnificent blast of cherry and white-chocolate, surfing on a righteous crest of nutty goodness.  And when that wave of delight crashes onto the shores of your mouth, you’re in for one heck of a trip, brah.

Peanut Butter Company does something most establishments have never even thought of: bringing back the child-like joy of plopping down on your couch and just gulping down spoonfuls of peanut-ty cheer.  Delicious, it is—but you should definitely watch the price.  If you think PHP 185 is worth the trip back to your childhood, and another PHP 185 for a sandwich to keep you company while you’re there, then the PBC is the right place for you.

I’ll catch you next time; I’m off to make a Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich.
